Handbook Cover CTTRANSIT

ACCESSIBILITY

Most CTTRANSIT buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts and have two tie down positions for

passengers who use wheelchairs. All CTTRANSIT buses have designated preferential seating for

persons with disabilities in the aisle facing seats at the front of the bus. By the end of 1996, all

CTTRANSIT buses will be wheelchair-accessible. CTTRANSIT buses are also equipped with a

kneeling feature that lowers the front of the bus !or boarding by those who have difficulty

climbing stairs.

WHEELCHAIR LIFTS AND SAFETY

In the interest of safety, CTTRANSIT staff will be happy to help wheelchair users become

fan-familiar with the operation of wheelchair lifts and tie-downs. For this service, simply call and

ask for the training supervisor at one of the following CTTRANSIT offices:

REDUCED FARES

Mass transit users who are disabled with a mobility impairment or are at least 65 years of age may

take advantage of the Department of Transportation's reduced senior/disabled fare policy. To

qualify, individuals must present a Medicare card or State-issued photo identification card each

time they board the bus. The reduced fare is equal to one-half the otherwise applicable adult cash

fare anytime on CTTRANSIT buses (or any other bus system contracted by the Connecticut

DOT). Cardholders are also entitled to half fare during off-peak hours on Metro-North commuter

trains. To apply for an ID card, contact:

MULTI-RIDE TICKET

A convenient multi-ride ticket, also called a "stored ride" ticket, eliminates the need to carry exact

change when riding the bus. The ticket is good for ten first-zone bus trips for an unlimited period

of time. A Medicare card or State-issued photo ID must still be presented when using a

multi-ride ticket. Multi-ride tickets are sold at CTTRANSIT's downtown information booths in

Hartford and New

Haven or by mail. To request a mail order form, call one of the Telephone Information Centers.

ESCORT SERVICE

No fare is charged to an escort traveling with a disabled passenger in order to help the passenger

on and off the bus.

SERVICE ANIMALS

Trained service animals for persons with disabilities are allowed on all CTTRANSIT buses.

DRIVER RESPONSIBILITIES

CTTRANSIT bus drivers are trained in the mechanical operation of lift equipment and in

awareness of the special needs of passengers with disabilities. While it is the driver's responsibility

to operate the lift and engage securement devices, passengers must be able to maneuver onto the

lift and inside the bus. Keep in mind that the driver cannot reach into a passenger's pocket or

purse to collect the fare.

Drivers are required to announce all major stops and transfer points. Drivers will announce other

stops upon request.
